- 요약The 1993 National Survey of Science and Mathematics Education, which involved approximately 6,000 teachers in grades 1-12, was designed to provide up-to-date information and to identify trends in the areas of teacher background and experience, curriculum and instruction, and the availability and use of instructional resources. Some questions ad dressed were: (1) How well prepared are science and mathematics teachers in terms of both content and pedagogy; (2) To what extent do teachers support reform notions embodied in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards and the National Science Education Standards; (3) What are teachers trying to accomplish in their science and mathematics instruction and what activities do they use to meet these objectives; and (4) What are the barriers to effective and equitable science and mathematics education? Data from the survey indicate: (a) science and mathematics education is moving closer to current reform ideas in some areas; (b) lack of content preparation appears to be a major barrier for elementary teachers; (c) the use of hands-on activities has increased, especially in elementary mathematics; (d) inadequate facilities and equipment and lack of money to purchase consumable supplies continue to be barriers; and (e) the goal of quality education for all students is far from becoming a reality.
